Helsby's prowess in front of goal saw them prevail in what was a hard fought encounter against Maghull.
Helsby took the lead after 15 minutes when good build-up play created an opening for Gary Lunt 8 yards out, which he coolly converted with a low shot to the Maghull keeper's right. The home side were playing some good stuff in the opening exchanges, no doubt confident after the 16 goals they had scored in their last two outings. 25 minutes into the game, Helsby doubled their lead, Jamie Bignall's right wing cross diverted past the Maghull goalie by the onrushing Lunt. With the hosts well on top at this stage, it was something of a surprise when the visitors pulled one back, Darren Moore failing to clear his lines and punished by the Maghull striker. But Helsby restored their two goal lead just before the break, Bignall scoring via the underside of the bar after a flowing Helsby move.
The game evened out after the interval, Helsby failing to recapture their early rhythm and Maghull sticking to their task. On the hour the visitors scored their second, Helsby's defence standing off to allow the Maghull player to pick his spot from the edge of the box. This woke the home side from their slumber, and they scored their fourth on 70 minutes. Substitute debutant Matt Rigby went on a twisting run from inside his own half and played the ball through to Bignall, who scored his second with a composed finish, rounding the keeper to score from an angle. The game petered out after that, Helsby happy to protect their lead as Maghull finally ran out of steam after a good second half response.
